BURY boxer Scott Quigg believes his impressive knockout win against Jose Cayetano on Saturday night will make the top fighters in the featherweight division take note.

Quigg returned to action for the first time in almost 10 months and bounced back from a first professional defeat to Carl Frampton in style after moving up a division from super bantamweight.

His ninth-round stoppage of his Mexican opponent at Manchester Arena saw him win the vacant WBA International featherweight championship and the 28-year-old was pleased with his performance after a frustrating spell on the sidelines recovering from a broken jaw.

Speaking exclusively to Bury Times after the win, Quigg said: “I’m absolutely buzzing with the win.

“Putting in a performance like that, I couldn’t be any happier.

“He knew what he was doing – he was very awkward and tricky.

“As people saw at times I was hitting fresh air but I knew that and the main thing was not to get frustrated.

“My aim was to slowly grind him down and once he started to tire I would land more punches and that is exactly what happened.

“I’m glad he was awkward and tricky because I got a good nine rounds in.

“I finished him off in the perfect way.”

Quigg went into his comeback fight with a point to prove after losing his world title to Frampton, and he came out of the blocks quickly, on the front foot from the first bell with some good combination punching that had Cayetano boxed into a corner.

Throughout the early rounds, Quigg landed good blows to both head and body but his Mexican opponent – fighting outside of his homeland for only the third time – withstood the onslaught and made the Bury star work hard to wear him down.

But the man who had never been stopped in 24 previous bouts tired and in the ninth round, Quigg landed a superb right hook that saw Cayetano crumble in a heap in the corner and beaten, much to the victor’s delight.

It was a big statement from Quigg in his new weight division as he looks to regain a world title in 2017.

On scintillating form like this, there is every chance that is a real possibility next year.
