CANDICE Wolstenholme could be a star of the future, according to her coach Mick Jelley, after easing to victory in her first competitive bout.

The 11-year-old Bury ABC boxer made fast work of opponent Kina Hawley, stopping the United Hull fighter in the opening round of their contest at White Rose Youth Centre in Leeds.

Candice had shown early promise in a series of skills bouts and has already been entered into the national championships, which start later this month.

“She is a little pocket rocket this one,” said Jelley, who has honed the young talents of Amir Khan, Scott Quigg and Rio Olympian Muhammad Ali.

“Candice’s grandad used to coach at the club and he has given her a good grounding.

“She just loves being in the ring, her attitude is fantastic and she packs a real punch.

“I could easily have another champion on my hands, but obviously it is only very early days.”

Bury ABC team-mate Saif Qureshi was also in action last week, beating Ingles Boxing Club fighter Joshua Gleeson on points in a 67k bout at the Shiregreen Workingmen’s Club in Sheffield.
