Bury captain Simon Belston is backing his Bury side to bounce back from last Saturday’s disappointing 57-run defeat to Worsley as they prepare for a double-header this weekend.

The surprise result saw Bury slip to third in the Bolton Association table as they fell to their first defeat of the season at the mid-table side.

Belston believes his side now have the perfect weekend to put things right with home fixtures against Little Hulton in the league on Saturday and Walshaw in the quarter-finals of the Cross Cup on Sunday.

Belston said: “It was a very disappointing result from our point of view. “All credit to Worsley. They put in a good performance and outplayed us on the day. “We’ve got to get back on the winning bandwagon and hopefully that will come this weekend with a double header.

“We have two home games so there is no better time to put it right.

“The key for us is to regain our consistency but we’ve only lost one game so why wouldn’t we be confident going into the weekend? “We’ve got a solid team, good set of lads and a good core to the team.”

Chris Taylor (86) got Worsley on the road in their total 178-4 with Nekoli Parris taking 2-38 but as the rain came down Bury were set a reduced target of 136 in 33 overs in their innings.

“Everything seemed to fall our way on Saturday with the reduced target,” said Belston.

“If you were to say that we would have that sort of target every week with a full set of 10 wickets I would snap your hands off.

“But that’s where Worsley came in to play and outplayed us because they bowled us out for 79.”

Himesh Silva took 7-41 and Michael Gould also took 3-16 as Bury’s Jamie Stone top scored for the visitors with 21.

“It was just a bad day at the office.”

Despite slipping to third in the table Belston says his team have to forget Saturday’s result and concentrate on regaining some consistency.

“We are particularly looking forward to the cup game. “Walshaw have been a bit hit or miss this season but they are a good side and I’d like to think they’d be in the top six. “It will be a tough challenge but it’s one we are ready for.”

Elsewhere, last season’s champions Atherton are making a charge up the table after beating Elton by seven wickets.

Elton batted first getting 178-7 thanks to Chris Read’s 60 and Danny Fenton’s 38 but Jamar Griffiths took 5-57.

A rain delayment meant Atherton needed to get a revised target of 168.

Rason Primus was 51 not out while Griffiths added 44 and Dale Tyrer (33) and Philip Wakefield (32) guided Atherton to their fifth consecutive win.

Second-placed Darcy Lever wrapped up a two-wicket win over Walshaw in another rain affected game.

Set a revised total of 105 to win in 24 overs, Chris Senn (22) and Michael Norris (20) played key roles with Gavin Nicholls the pick of the bowlers taking 4-9.

Earlier in the game, Danny Hornby hit 69 as Walshaw reached 142.
