UNSWORTH produced impressive back-to-back performances to secure a weekend double, following up a hard-fought Central Lancashire League T20 home victory over Clifton with a successful run chase in the league at Middleton.

Although they had won the first two matches in their T20 group, they still had to beat Clifton to progress to the knockout stages, and it was close.

They made a mixed start, reaching 40-3 from eight overs, but captain Chris Williams (30 not out) and Chris Long (39no) combined to set the visitors a target of 113.

Jack O’Brien put Unsworth on top with two early wickets after Williams had removed Clifton’s professional and Jengahir removed three of the middle order to leave the visitors needing 24 from the last two overs with two wickets left. But a flurry of boundaries got them back into it before Williams grabbed the last wicket with Clifton seven short.

Unsworth looked up against it at Middleton, chasing a total of 209-8, but Jeff Keyt and Jon Wiggans set the tone for the reply with a solid start before a rain interruption left them chasing a target of 177 from 40 overs.

Keyt went for 30 just after the resumption but Williams and Abid Fazil forged a strong partnership.

Williams was eventually out for 50 and Fazil brought the game home with some help from the middle order, securing victory with three overs to spare.
