KARL Belston says winning the Cross Cup on Sunday would complete the success set at Bury.

With impressive development on and off the field, the wicketkeeper says the one thing that is missing is silverware.

They can put that right at Winton Cricket Club on Sunday when they take on Edgworth in the final of one of the oldest cup competitions in world cricket.

With the Radcliffe Road men joint second in the league, they have already shown strong progress from their first season in the Bolton Association last year.

And Belston, brother of Bury captain Simon, says putting something in the trophy cabinet would cap a great first two years in the league since moving from the Manchester Association.

“Winning on Sunday would mean a lot,” he said.

“It would show how far we have come from when we left the Manchester Association to where we are now.

“We’ve got a great new clubhouse up now which has enabled us to be separate from the sports club, we’ve got a strong club with a lot of really good youngsters pushing through and a good committee.

“Now what we really want is a trophy to put in the cabinet.

“We were in numerous cup finals and won the league in the Manchester Association, now we want to win something in the Bolton Association.”

There is a sub-plot to Sunday’s final, too, with Bury looking to make up for a bad performance when they met Sunday’s opponents in the league.

“We owe it to ourselves and to the club to put in a good performance,” said Belston, whose side have beaten Lostock, Bury rivals Walshaw and the team with whom they are currently joint second top of the league, Daisy Hill, to reach Sunday’s final.

“We were very disappointed with the way we got beaten by Edgworth in the league game when they didn’t score too many and we couldn’t chase it.

“We were beaten by the better side on the day and we want to put that right this time.”

Before that, they are looking to win the last two games of the regular league season – at Lostock on Saturday and at home to Swinton Moorside seven days later – to secure second spot, with top spot seemingly now Flixton’s for the taking.

“We are ready and proper up for the season, league and cup,” said Belston.

“It’s bunched up at the top, very tight, but one win should see us in the top six and we’ll be going out to win both.

“And we’ll have our good balance of experience and young players there as usual.

“Mukhtar Nasir and Sam Nolan-Massey both play in the Bolton Association Under-18s Colts team and Dominic Morris is about 16 and getting first-team experience.

“If you are good enough you are in. That’s what we do at Bury, we promote youth and those young ones are really fired up for the end of the season as we all are.”
