AFTER the recent summer spell it was back to dull and damp conditions when Walmer Men's A team faced Holcombe Brook at Mosley Avenue last week in Division Two of the Bolton Tennis League.

The visitors' first pair were unbeaten on the night, but Adam Gooddy and Paul Biggins scored 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 and Rick Morley and Jay Hardy 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 to put Walmer in control.

Dave Gerrard and Luke Blackburn took a half set and a 6-2 win to give the home side a 5.5-3.5 win. The points gave Walmer the boost of consolidating third place and getting within one point of second-placed Holcombe.

The men's B team had a stronger side out for their Division Three match with Markland Hill B but despite a solid performance by Wyn Lees and Julian Nuttall they were beaten 6-3.

Walmer Mixed A were at home to Markland Hill C in Division Two and took control in the mixed section when despite a traffic jam causing Luke and Gail Blackburn to concede a set, Adam Gooddy and Lisa Morley won 6-2, Paul Biggins and Marina Hobson won 6-2 and Joe Donaldson and Dianne Hardman won 6-1.

Walmer then took all the remaining sets with wins for Gail and Marina by 6-0, 6-1 and Dianne by 6-3, 6-1. For the men, Gooddy and Biggins won 6-3, 6-2, and it was good to see the young partnership of Blackburn and Donaldson win their sets 6-5, 6-4.

Walmer's 66-36 win keeps them in second place in Division Two as the season takes a break for the Bolton League tournament.
