GREENMOUNT head into the weekend top of the Bolton League and full of confidence for the cup final says captain Andy Kerr.

The Brandlesholme Road men’s routine victory against Tonge coupled with defeats for Egerton and Farnworth blew the title race wide open last Saturday.

And the skipper, who is eager to land a league and Hamer Cup double in the club’s final season in the Bolton League, admits it’s a ‘good feeling’ to be leading the division going into one of the most important weekends of his career.

“We knew we had to keep on winning and hope the other teams around us slipped up,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting both first and second-placed teams to lose on the same weekend but it’s good to be back on top of the pile. It’s where we want to be.

“It’s definitely a good feeling going into cup final weekend at the top.”

The skipper is now backing his side to remain at the summit by winning their league game against Walkden on Saturday before the cup final clash against Westhoughton at Eagley Cricket Club on Sunday.

Greenmount, who have defeated Tonge, Bradshaw and Farnworth Social Circle on their way to the final, beat the Bolton-based side by 25 runs in the league at St George’s Oval last month, and Kerr is hoping his side can get the better of Rob Houghton’s team once again.

“We beat them at their place earlier in the season so I guess we are one up on them.

“But they are good side with a good professional so we certainly won’t be underestimating them.

“However, I believe we’ve got plenty of depth in squad and I’d back us to come out as winners.”

The League’s record-breaking wicket-taker Mark Stewart was captain the last time Greenmount lifted the Hamer Cup in 2011, and Kerr is eager to follow in the club stalwart’s footsteps.

“It would be great to win the Hamer Cup in our last season before joining the Greater Manchester League.

“It’s my second year as captain and from a personal achievement it would be fantastic to lift the cup.”

Basement side Tonge – who are still yet to register a win this campaign – fell victim to a recurring problem that they just cannot score many runs against Greenmount

on Saturday.

This time out they had ninth-placed batsman Iain McLellan to thank for keeping the score respectable as he top-scored with 24 to aid in them posting 144.

Veteran Stewart was the pick of the bowlers taking 3-48.

Skipper Andrew Kerr led the reply scoring 69 not out in 74 balls, and Travis Townsend added 58 as Greenmount secured the win with seven wickets to spare to move three points clear at the top of the table.
