GREENMOUNT all-rounder Phil Heaton is disappointed that his side could not reproduce their cup form in the latter stages of the league campaign.

The Brandlesholme Road men had looked on course for a league and cup double after clinching the Hamer Cup in May, but despite victory against Little Lever on Saturday, Andy Kerr's side fell to defeat against second-placed Westhoughton on Sunday to end any hopes of the title.

"In the Hamer Cup we played absolutely fantastic. Nobody got near us in the four games, we just blew them all away," said Heaton.

"We've showed glimpses of that in the league but just not often enough.

"We knew we were going to play all the top teams in the last six weeks and we were in a good position. But in the last month we've lost silly games.

"We haven't put enough runs on the board in recent matches and when we do we haven't bowled well enough.

"It's a bit disappointing because we wanted to go out of the Bolton League with a bang."

Star bowler Mark Stewart reached 109 wickets for the season with his 12-wicket haul at the weekend, and although pleased for the Bolton League's all-time record wicket taker, Heaton is also delighted that he still holds one record that the Greenmount stalwart doesn't.

"I hold the record for the most wickets in a season with 119.

"I was a bit embarrassed to take that record off him and at one point it looked like he would get it back this year.

"Mark is superb. He's been the best bowler in the area for years and still is now."

Despite Stewart taking five wickets, Westhoughton got revenge on Greenmount for their Hamer Cup final defeat on Saturday.

Rob Brown top scored for Westhoughton with 76 while Kieran Paisley added 37 and Rob Houghton 29 as their side posted 257 by batting solidly throughout.

Joshua Macey took 3-39 and Stewart 5-91 for Greenmount who lost both openers for just four runs before Travis Townsend and Ryan Senior steadied the ship with 69 and 30 respectfully.

A decent knock of 24 at number seven by Heaton and 17 not out by Chris Evans were not enough to seriously trouble Westhoughton whose pro Qaiser Abbas stood out with 6-64 and Oliver Newby took 3-77.

Stewart continued his good weekend taking seven wickets in Greenmount's 79-run victory at Little Lever on Sunday.

The record breaker finished with 7-33 to restrict the home side to 124 in reply to Greenmount’s 203.

Captain Kerr set Greenmount on their way with 93 and Heaton completed his good weekend with the bat with 44. Little Lever deputy pro Sahad Masood took 8-54.

In reply, Simon Anderton scored 37no and Donald Heyes 42.
