BURY District is toasting a double success after both the Under-13s and Under-11s won their cup finals.

The U13s scooped the prestigious 2015 Hacking Cup at Leigh Cricket Club and the U11s defeated completed an emphatic win against Oldham to lift the Bob Hurst Rose Bowl for a third time.

After the disappointment of losing out in last year’s final, the unbeaten U11s completed an impressive season for Bury, by finishing the season as champions of the Greater Manchester League Division One winners, before storming through quarter-final and semi-final demolitions of Hyndburn and Blackpool district teams.

With the final against Oldham reduced to 35 overs per side due to anticipated heavy showers, Bury won the toss and chose to bat.

Following the early loss of opener Danial Ahern, captain Evan Williams then battled against a stern test of swing and seam movement before taking command of the innings.

Fellow Greenmount player Joe Hornsby played an excellent supporting role before finally being run out for a valuable 40. Williams then pushed home the advantage with a masterful display of mature cricket strokes, with some delicious timing and placement to finish on a magnificent 85 not out.

Despite a couple of quick wickets in the last five overs, Bury finished on a strong score of 166-4 which proved to be a big ask for Oldham.

The result was very quickly decided when Callum Hunter took the new ball and blitzed through the Oldham top order, clean bowling their top three batters all for no score to reduce them to 5-3 after just three overs.

Nathaniel Young then had held the middle-order under his spellbound with seven overs of well-controlled spin bowling; captain Williams chipped in with a couple of wickets and Will Lightfoot mopped up the tail with three wickets to complete the rout as Oldham capitulated to 48 all out. Bury victorious by 118 runs.

With U13s manager Paul Belston, Lleyton Belston and Henry Doyle all away, and stand-in wicketkeeper Oliver Pilkington breaking a finger, it was always going to be difficult against tough opponents Wigan in the Hacking Cup.

When skipper Jack Doyle went for the first ball of the game, Bury looked in trouble. However, Owen Halstead led the recovery with 37 and Aaryman Roy and Sam Rhodes added 20 each as Bury reached 154.

Impressive fielding and bowling by Bury meant the Wigan reply never really got going.

Owen Collinge took four wickets for five runs to bowl them out for 59 as Bury’s U13s clinched the trophy.

John Stevens, of Greenmount and head coach of the Bury U11s team, said: “This has been a great campaign for the boys and they have demonstrated a strong work ethic and commitment to execute their skills to the highest level.

“We are proud of their performance and improvement across the season.

“There have been many impressive individual achievements, among those being captain Evan Williams amassing more than 500 runs at an average of 72 and Callum Hunter grabbing 22 wickets at an average of just four apiece. Both boys have represented the county throughout the season.”

Proud U13s manager Paul Belston said: “The U13s’ win along with the brilliant Bury District U11s winning the Bob Hurst Rose Bowl on the same day shows how strong junior cricket in the Bury area is.”
