I GOT a bit of stick on social media following a column I wrote about Brooksbottom in which I suggested the best players want to be vying for honours in the top tier rather than lower down the new league structure.

If I am being honest, I believe the powers-that-be should have gone a step further when trying to revamp local cricket.

Why stop at creating a Greater Manchester League? I think there should be a regional Premier League featuring the cream of the crop in all the top leagues across the North West.

As an amateur player I want to play the best because I want to be the best.

If I help my club win the league I want to be able to say we are the best club in the region, not just Greater Manchester.

People talk about travelling being a problem, but I think if you have ambition to play at the very highest level of regional cricket then you won't mind travelling to the Wirral, Blackpool or Cumbria.

Sure, we have the Lancashire Knockout, which is a great competition, but these are one-off cup games. You have to be playing the best teams week in, week out to be regarded as the top team in the North West.

The best sides in the Greater Manchester League, Bolton League, Northern League, Liverpool Competition, Pennine League, Lancashire League and the best leagues in Cheshire are all on a par with each other.

So let's bring them together. They can remain in place as feeder leagues, with some kind of play-off to sort out promotion and relegation to the Premier League.

The details can be ironed out, but I feel it should be up to someone at the Lancashire Cricket Board to make this happen and feel it is only a matter of time before they do.
