IT does not matter who is waiting for Walshaw in the final of the Derek Kay Per-Fit First XI Cup, captain Mikey Watt is confident his side can be the first to put their name on the trophy.

They rolled over Greater Manchester League Premier Division outfit Denton St Lawrence in the semi-final on Sunday, claiming their second top-tier scalp after beating Flixton in the last eight.

Walshaw will now play either Premier side Clifton or Division One rivals Bamford Fieldhouse, who are due to play their last-four encounter this weekend, in the first final in the competition's history.

"It does not matter who we play, both Clifton and Bamford have already shown they are good cup sides this season so will both give us a tough game," said Watt.

"Clifton won the GMCL's T20 competition, while Bamford made it to the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Knockout. We obviously know what kind of threat Bamford pose after playing them in the league – they are another top side.

"But what our performances have shown against Flixton and Denton St Lawrance, who are both holding their own in the Premier, is that we should fear no-one.

"We are a good strong side, with strength in depth in every area and a real killer instinct.

"If we get a sniff of victory we are right on it and don't let the opportunity go."

Opener Jack McClung provided the bedrock of Sunday's victory over Denton St Lawrence, hitting 70 of Walshaw's 187 runs.

And sub-pro Majid Majeed weighed in with 5-25 to help dismiss the visitors inside 44 overs to claim a comfortable 49-run win.

Walshaw set up what turned out to be the perfect weekend with a four-wicket victory over second-placed Roe Green on Saturday to open up a four-point gap at the summit of Division One.

Kendrick Hatton took 4-46 as they bowled out their rivals for 142, then despite a few wobbles made it past their target with 11 overs to spare as Ally Dickson steered them home with an unbeaten 32.

Elsewhere in Division One, Elton fell into the bottom four following a 150-run defeat against fellow strugglers Swinton Moorside, but Woodbank's bid to break into the top four was helped by a 62-run win against strugglers Astley and Tyldesley.

Woodbank pro John Whitehead hit 22 boundaries on his way to an unbeaten 151 from 100 balls, while opener Steve Dearden added 62 as they put on 304-5 from their 50 overs.

Astley and Tyldesley made it to 163-1 from 30 overs but were unable to keep pace with the run-rate as they finished on 242-8.

Kieran Grundy (4-50) finished with the best figures of the Woodbank bowlers.

The result left Anthony Harris's men level on points with fourth-placed Winton and a point behind Bamford Fieldhouse in third.

Edenfield are fifth in Division Two, a point outside the promotion places, after pulling off a three-wicket win against leaders Stand.

Fred Nixon took 5-41 to help bowl out Stand for 181, while all-rounder Brandon Diplock top scored in their reply with 41 as they reached their target with four overs to spare.

Brooksbottom edged to an 11-run victory against bottom side Radcliffe.

They were bowled out for 172 after Radcliffe's Mark Patten took 7-49 while newly restored skipper Chris Berry took six catches behind the stumps.

But Will Sutton's 43 proved crucial as Brooksbottom restricted their neighbours to 161 all out.

Daniel Farley top scored for Radcliffe with 60 from 99 deliveries while Brooksbottom dropped a number of catches, but three wickets apiece from Luke Benaquista (3-36) and skipper Richard Ernill (3-32) secured a victory that kept them fourth bottom.

Ernill said: "Having failed to win two or three close ones this season it was vital that we got over the line.

"A great win against a side that are far better than their lowly position suggests – our togetherness got us home, certainly not our catching."
