UNSWORTH produced a remarkable display to beat Greater Manchester Premier League title-chasers Clifton by 110 runs and climb out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.

The result provided a double blow for Greenmount, who replaced them in the bottom four after losing by 72 runs at Prestwich.

It was also a fantastic weekend for Bury, who won by six wickets at home to Denton St Lawrence. And while they remain second bottom, the Radcliffe Road men are now just three points behind Greenmount and four from safety with three matches remaining.

But while Bury and Greenmount must now rely on results elsewhere, Unsworth know Premier League survival rests in their own hands.

Club captain and professional Chris Williams once again led from the front, hitting 83 after opening the bat and taking four wickets for 25 runs to snuff out the challenge of a Clifton side that dropped to third in the table and all but blew their chances of winning the league.

Williams' measured innings came from 138 deliveries and included eight fours, while Jim Wiggans (29) and Kevin Ramsay (27) provided the support as Unsworth finished on 207-5.

The captain then removed four of Clifton's top five batsmen, before Jack O'Brien (3-23) and Steven McGuinness (2-6) finished off the tail as the visitors were bowled out for 97.

Prestwich took the opportunity to move above Clifton into second place, three points behind leaders Egerton, as they heaped the misery on Greenmount.

Four of Prestwich's top six batsmen made it past 30 runs, but none managed to make a big score as Greenmount's bowlers restricted them to 225-9 from their 50 overs.

Sam Holden top scored for the home side with 39 while Danny Hornby took 4-51 and Mark Stewart 3-75.

But the Brandlesholme Road men were unable to mount a strong reply.

Once opener and captain Andy Kerr was removed for 24 and Ryan Senior followed shortly after for 28, both to the spin bowling of Prestwich skipper Andy Bradley, their resistance crumbled.

Bradley ended with figures of 6-44 as Greenmount were bowled out for 153 with almost eight overs still remaining.

Bury bowlers Jordan Belston and Cosmond Walters ripped through the Denton St Lawrence order to set up their convincing victory.

Belston took 6-24 from 12 overs and Walters supported with 3-10 from 11.4 to bowl out DSL for 101.

Walters then halted a worrying collapse, hitting 34 after Bury had slumped to 15-3 – all three wickets going to DSL's opening bowler Steve Kirwan (3-21).

Wicketkeeper Akil Greenidge put on 65 with Walters for the fourth wicket before leading his side to victory with an unbeaten 40.

Basement club Elton could are seven points from safety with two games to play in Division One following a two-wicket defeat at Woodhouses.

They could be relegated next weekend if results don't go their way.

Walshaw and Woodbank, meanwhile, are in the thick of the battle for promotion following last weekend's results.

Woodbank comfortably saw off strugglers Whalley Range by 130 runs to move into the top four.

Captain Anthony Harris hit 62 and was backed up by a run-a-ball 40 from pro John Whitehead as they home side put on 209-8 before bowling out Whalley Range for 79. Damian Stringer was the pick of the bowlers with 4-22.

It was a bitter-sweet afternoon for Walshaw as they were knocked off top spot by First XI Cup conquerors Bamford Fieldhouse following their nerve-jangling tie at home to Swinton Moorside.

Ryan Tazelaar took 5-29 as they bowled out Swinton for 96 but Walshaw's batsmen were unable to build on that foundation.

Opener Jack McClung looked set to knock off the necessary runs on his own after hitting 33 from 27 balls, but the wickets tumbled after his dismissal with seven of the Walshaw batsmen losing their wickets for a combined total of 14 runs.

Despite that alarming collapse, they managed to eke out their way to within one point of victory before captain Mikey Watt was bowled lbw by Abdul Khan, who took 7-28.
