GREENMOUNT Under-13s could justifiably be renamed "the Invincibles" after going though a second season unbeaten in league cricket.

The side did the Greater Manchester Cricket League double, winning both the league and cup, while also clinching Lancashire Knockout Trophy.

As county champions they also qualified for regional competition.

But after beating Cheshire title holders Nantwich to make the Northern Finals day at York Cricket Club, the side was depleted by holidays and county call-ups and unable to progress into the ECB National Knockout.

Gareth Williams, who coaches Greenmount U13s, said: “This continued success reflects the hard work these boys have put in throughout the winter and the season as a whole.

"What has been pleasing this year has been the contribution of the younger boys and hopefully the experience they have gained will stand them in good stead for next year.

"It has also been pleasing to see the development of the older boys. Evan Williams and Calum Hunter have been regular members of the Greenmount second team, with Evan also making his first-team debut this season.

"Matthew Senior, Dan Stevens and Dan ????? have also done well for the fourth team.

"We will be starting indoor training in January and would be interested to hear for any boys who would be interested in joining across all the age groups.”

Victory in the GMCL Cup was their final act of the season, beating Glodwick in the semi-finals and the hosts in the final.

Williams added: "Our innings in the semi-final followed a similar pattern to most of Greenmount’s games this season.

"Evan hit 41 before Calum added a belligerent 87, with the innings finishing on 162.

"To Glodwick’s credit they were not overawed chasing such a large total but they eventually fell short on 140-9.

"After winning the toss in the final, Greenmount once again chose to bat first and the innings was again dominated by Calum and Evan.

"This time Calum was out for a quick-fire 49, leaving Evan to dominate the innings, finishing on 95 not out and the team posting an imposing 182.

"This was always going to be a big ask for a young Worsley team and once their danger man was run out for 37, the result was inevitable, with Worsley finishing on a very respectable 119."

Evan and Calum missed the Northern Finals Day after being picked to play for Lancashire in the Taunton Cricket Festival, but they continued their fine form for the county, helping the Red Rose win the competition.

The young all-rounders also made it on to the Festival honours board, Lancs skipper Evan for his 5-15 against Worcestershire and Calum for his 5-22 against Devon.

They were not the only members of the Greenmount U13s to earn representative honours.

Dan Stevens was rewarded for some good performances with a call-up to the county development team, while Mathew Senior played for East Lancashire in the county festival, and they were all joined in the Bury District team by Harry Fines, Oli Filkins and Joe Hornsby.

The team also included two county u10s players in Harry Brindle and Harry Bradley.

There were also good performances from Bury District U11s players Tom Nuttall and Alex Yates.
