RADCLIFFE primary schools are being invited to enter cricket teams into a tournament to find the town's champions.

In the second of what is intended to be an annual event, five schools have so far entered and organisers are looking for more to play for the Harry Wolstenholme Memorial Cup.

The winners will go through to the Lancashire schools competition where they will represent Radcliffe.

Last year four schools entered the Radcliffe tournament – Wesley Methodist, Radcliffe, St Andrews and Cams Lane, with Wesley the inaugural champions.

Already this year the number of entrants is up by one with last year's quartet joined by St Mary's, and as far as the organisers are concerned it is the more the merrier.

The competition takes place at the ground of Radcliffe Cricket Club who also provide umpires and scorers for the competition.

It will be staged on Thursday, June 7, beginning at 9.30am with the final taking place at around 1pm.

The competition is played to ECB Kwik Cricket rules with eight players in a team and a maximum of 10 players per squad.

The deadline for entries is Friday, April 20.

Radcliffe Cricket Club are also offering youngsters the chance to try their hand at the game.

They can provide a coach to attend schools and do some coaching during the school day or after school for weekly sessions, free of charge until the tournament.

Youngsters are also invited to attend Radcliffe CC's junior training sessions at the club on Unsworth Street which start next Friday and take place between 6-7.30pm. The cost is £3 per session and all ages and abilities are welcome.
