Bury had a mixed weekend with their league victory over Hindley St Peters being tempered by a JW Lees Cup defeat at Euxton.
The win over Hindley was Bury’s first in the Manchester Association this summer, and Amaar Baig was the star man with 86 runs and bowling figures of 1-15 from ten overs.
“It was a relief to get that first victory,” said Bury skipper Simon Belston. “We are still bottom but we have closed the gap and another couple of victories would put us up to fourth or fifth.
“Our opening partnership is great at the moment, but we need to work on our middle order. We were 100-0 at one stage before we slipped to 160-8 and it was left to me and Arshad Khan to see us home and finish the job.
“The pro, Asif Iqbal, is short of form at the moment but we know he can win games on his own once he clicks and that won’t be too far away.”
Brooksbottom were beaten by Newton Heath, despite a fine bowling performance from skipper David Brown.
Brown returned 6-49 to help dismiss the home side for 165, but Brox could not overhaul their target and ended on 133-9 – Paul Hopton top-scoring with 35 not out.
