Harry and Ryan picked for Lancs

WOODBANK 11-year-olds Harry Dearden and Ryan Barker have been selected to play for Lancashire Under-11s.
Tottington Primary School pupil Dearden, a batsman, is the son of local all-rounder Steve Dearden, and credits his father with his selection.
“My dad has been brilliant,” he said. “He bought me my first bat when I was six and took me up to Walshaw to play cricket for the first time and I really enjoyed it and carried on playing.”
It is the first time for more than 25 years that Woodbank have unearthed two youngsters to play for their county.
As well as stints at Haslingden and Elton, the youngster is now settled at Woodbank where his captaincy has led the side to the summit of the Lancashire County League table.
Woodbank Primary School pupil Barker, and Dearden, were selected following successful trials.
Barker said: “To play for Lancs is brilliant and I hope I can keep improving and hopefully become a pro one day.”
Both lads have been coached by Martin Kay at Woodbank. “It’s excellent news for the club to have one youngster selected,” he said. “But to have two really shows the steps we as a club are taking to promote our junior cricket.
“These two are great prospects and if they continue to improve, I envisage few problems for them making a career out of their sport.”
