STAND’S threadbare squad stepped up to the plate with an impressive win.

Athletic knocked the ball around well and wingers Lee Bushel and Mike Hunter caused problems from the Didsbury full-backs.

They took the lead on 25 minutes when Ollie McGee fired home after captain Paul Lyons had stepped over Darren Buckley’s corner.

The hosts hit a sweet equaliser five mintes later and Stand had to ride their luck for much of the second half.

But with 15 minutes remaining they got the winner they deserved, Jamie Newton taking his goal well.

Stand are now up to fourth in the league, the highest they have been for a long time.

Stand Reserves started their season with a 3-2 home win over Atherton. Jakes Wass notched a brace and Kev Welsh scored late on.

The first team host Beechfield on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
