ELTON should have won with ease against a side which was not the physical presence they were last season.
Three points were there for the taking and Elton contributed to their failure by conceding too many free kicks in dangerous areas.
Chapel went ahead after 10 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty, despite the visiting centre-forward keeping his feet after getting a slight touch.
Damian Berry made amends for conceding the penalty when the visiting keeper spilled a Stubbs shot and the big defender pounced on the rebound.
Stubbs floated a magnificent shot over the keeper’s head from 45 yards for the goal of the game, but the advantage was soon lost when James Everall fired a free kick over the Elton wall into the angle of the goal.
Elton went ahead again when substitute Lee Gaskell ran onto a well weighted through ball and finished with some style in the bottom corner 10 minutes from time.
Stubbs was then brought down in the box but Barnes shot too close to the keeper and Chapel made them pay with an equaliser in the 96th minute.
Elton’s reserves suffered a 2-1 defeat at Monton, Tom Smith scoring.
