A fencing star from Bury impressed on Sunday as he represented Great Britain at the Cadet and Junior European Championships in Jerusalem.

Daniel Kiss, aged 15, of Salle Kiss Fencing Club finished in seventh place in the cadet men’s foil event.

Kiss, who is part of the 41-strong squad competing for GB, dropped just one of his six poule fights to Germany’s Alexander Bappert and beat three other opponents – including team-mate Kamal Minott – to reach the quarter-finals. In the last eight, Kiss was up against Poland’s Maxime Tarasiewicz and narrowly missed out on a medal with a 15-14 defeat.

The youngster will now fence in the team event today.

Kiss headed to the championships having won back-to-back silver medals at the under-17 and under-20 GB Championships earlier this month.

Kiss’s mother and fencing coach, Natalia Gyuricska, said: “Daniel had a lot of pressure on his shoulders going into the u17 contest.

“He fenced well all day but lost the final fight by two points to Newham fencer Kamal Minott.”

Having taken the Cadet men’s Foil silver medal, Daniel was relaxed and determined going into the junior u20 event.

With 75 men competing for the national title, Kiss made it two finals in a row, dropping just one fight in the first round, to progress to the semi-finals with ease.

A tight match in the semi-final against ZFW’s Charlie St John saw Kiss record a 15-13 victory to fight it out with Chichester’s George Hendrie for the gold medal.

Both Hendrie and Kiss showed plenty of courage and resolve in the final, with Hendrie getting the better of Kiss as he led 9-4 with a minute to go in the first half.

However, Kiss came back to close the gap to 9-8 at the break and looked to be having the better of the second period, before Hendrie fought back to take the title 15-10.

“Again, Daniel fenced well all day but was up against a 20-year-old in the final,” said Natalia.

“The standard of fencing was very high on both days, and to come away with two silver medals is a fantastic result for Daniel.”

Kiss, who attends Bury Grammar School Boys, is currently ranked number one in the under-17 age category.
