Bury were without three of their regular eight-man team as the Bank Holiday weekend played havoc with the Comets visit to Yorkshire to face Heckmondwike Saints on Sunday.

The 15-heat six-a-side format favoured by Heckmondwike played into Bury’s hands.

The five regulars available, were joined by two vets, and they rose to the occasion in style.

The first heat was drawn 5-5 but was followed by a 7-3 and a 6-4 to the Bury team with wins for Ben Scranage, James Elston, Will Owens and David Renc.

The match continued in this vein with further wins for Elston, Scranage and Parrish. They were all well backed up by their respective partners as Bury held a solid nine-point lead at the interval.

Second half race wins for Elston, Parrish and Owens secured the match for the Bury team.

Vet Paul Dyson, on his return, rode well beating an opponent in each of his three rides, while Gary Hollingsworth recovered well from a heavy fall in the first race to follow his partner home for a drawn heat in the penultimate race.

Bury scores: Ben Scranage 17+2, David Renc 15, James Elston 14+1, Chris Parrish 14, Will Owens 12+3, Paul Dyson 7+1, Gary Hollingsworth 3+1.

The under-13s battled hard in their Third Division match with an excellent performance from Louis Turner with 15 points, and a good 13 points from newcomer Daniel Bowler.

Daniel Miller, Duncan Whalley, Angel Etheridge and Hermione Whalley gave their all against far older opposition but were eventually defeated.

There is no official match this week but there is training for new recruits and youngsters on Saturday at 10am, Tuesday at 5pm and the established junior and seniors at 6pm on Thursday, followed by a come-and-try evening for a scout group at 7.30pm.

On Saturday, June 8, Bury are away to Sheffield in a tough fixture.
