There was plenty of travelling for Bury’s riders over the weekend as they competed in individual events at both British and Northern League levels.

Tom Whitman headed to Edinburgh for the under-13s British finals.

The 10-year-old began with a good second place, and also secured a couple of thirds before almost pulling off the shock of the meeting when he passed eventual winner Kieran Swanson – holding him in second place for a lap.

Whitman finished with 10 points then joined up with four of the seniors at Cramlington in Northumbria on Sunday for the Northern Alliance League Individual Finals.

Whitman competed in the u13s events and secured second place with 16 hard-earned points.

Not content with the u13s, the youngster also entered the u16s events and finished with an excellent 10 points.

After an elimination event, all four of Bury’s riders contested the blue ribbon event – the senior individual.

Chris Parish took heat one for four points. Ben Scranage and Kristian Ramsden met in race three but Scranage raced away for four points, with Ramsden in third place.

Will Owen led early in race four but a mistake saw him pushed to the back as the meeting developed.

Polish stars Pavel Idizorek and Sheffield’s Damian Zareba made their mark with two wins from Idizorek putting the Heckmondwike rider in the lead with 11 points, closely followed by Zareba and Scranage on 10. Bury’s other riders Parish, Owen and Ramsden had mixed fortunes and after four races each had fallen out of contention. A fine fifth race from Idizorek saw him take the title with 19 points.

A great last race allowed Scranage to tie with former Bury rider Damian Zareba for second place on 17 points. In the race-off Scranage called correctly and took position two but a fine gate from Zareba saw him force his way round to secure second place overall.

Fred Rothwell and Paul Dyson contested the Orchid Eurovets round five in Newport but were unable to reach the finals.

Bury host Coventry at Goshen Park in the second round of the British Team Championship on Sunday, 2pm start.
