Bolton Old Links moved one step closer to retaining their Red Rose League title when they entertained Bury Seniors in their county league derby last Tuesday.

Only Hurlston Hall look to have a reasonable chance of denying the reigning champions a second consecutive crown, as the season draws to a close.

A late rally from Bury probably ensures that they will avoid the wooden spoon, and with four matches out of the last five on the Unsworth Hall track, the visitors still harbour hopes of repeating last season’s mid-table final position.

Bolton were made to fight hard in the opening game, finally snatching victory on the last green, after spirited resistance from the visitors. With the second game also going to the home side it was left to the Bury number three pairing, Ged Eckersley and Rod Davies to put two points on the board for the visitors with a 3 & 2 win over John Walley & Steve Heap.

A run of three consecutive defeats gave Bolton a 10-2 winning lead before the Bury’s number seven pairing of Ray Rosler and Dave Kerry had a comfortable 5&4 win over Roy Murphy and Terry Martin.
