SOME of the world’s best riders will descend on Goshen Sports Centre on Monday when Bury Cycle Speedway Club hosts the British Cycle Speedway Championships – the highlight of the racing season.

The outstanding Bury circuit will be transformed into a mini stadium, with seating, covered hospitality areas, cycle shop, ‘Race-a-Mate’ challenge and extensive refreshments for the bumper holiday crowd.

It is the third time the Comets have hosted the finals following their success in staging the 2001 and 2006 editions and establishes the club among the premier cycle speedway promoters.

Finals’ weekend was established in 1974 and this season will be the first time three finals will take place on Bank Holiday Monday.

The action will start at 11am with the Under-16s Boys’ Championship, continuing with the Women’s/U16 Girls’ Final at 1pm and culminating with the biggest championship of the domestic season, the British Open Individual final at 3pm.

The three finals are sponsored by a number of well known personalities from the sport; Sheffield’s Ian Brown (the proprietor of Wosskow Brown Solicitors) plus Bury’s own founder member, Paul Mann, and club secretary, John Whiting.

With qualification rounds in Sheffield and Astley over the weekend, the first target for a would-be champion is to make the finals.

In addition, on Saturday at Astley’s Gin Pit Village circuit the youngest stars in the sport fight it out for the British U10 Boys’ and Girls’ Championships with Comets riders Daniel Miller, Duncan Whalley, Tom Deakin and Angel Etheridge all taking part in their first ever British Championships.

The Comets will have four representatives in the Britsish Open with long-time club number one Chris Parish going all out for qualification on home ground. Kris Ramsden and Will Owens are also looking for a first final appearance, in their first championship at this level while experienced Ben Scranage is hoping to make a fourth final, having qualified in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

Young Comets James Elston and Danny Taylor will look to make home advantage count in the U16s boys’ event.

Entry to the finals day is free. For further details see burycyclespeedway.com.
