BURY will take on the Sedgley Park second team this weekend in their final pre-season game on the back of a promising display in the Thornton Cleveleys’ 10-a-side tournament.

Sam Ware scored an impressive 10 tries in six matches as Bury, pictured, finished runners-up.

Thornton Cleveleys’ B team were the only side to beat them, edging the final 15-14 after another narrow victory in the group stages.

The Bury team started brightly to run 35-0 winners against Thornton A with tries from forward Jordan Miller, Callum Pattern and two for Ware, one of which followed a mazy 80-metre run.

Ware scored another four tries in a 35-0 win against a representative Cavalliers side in the second match, with Alex English, Wayne Ellerway and Karl Simpson also making scores.

Thornton’s B side posed a much sterner test in the third game, ending Bury’s winning run after clocking up two tries before the visitors could get on to the score sheet via a Pattern touchdown.

Tries from scrum half Simpson, Miller and a brace from Ware got Bury back to winning ways in their final group game to run out comfortable 24-5 winners against the Panthers.

The two teams had an immediate re-match in the semi-finals with George Kelly, Ellerway and a stand out try from a sublime off-load by Elliott Naylor to put David Kenyon over the try line helping Bury win a much tighter affair.

Ware opened the scoring in the final, but Thornton used the conditions to their advantage in the second half to take a 15-7 lead.

And despite a second try for Ware, time ran out for Bury, who will be returning to the full sided game against the Sedgley Park seconds on Saturday at the Radcliffe Road ground. Kick-off 2pm.
