BURY’S youngest riders took centre stage this week as Tom Whitwam claimed third place in the British Youth and Junior Championships and Danny Taylor won the club’s annual Ken McCreesh Cup.

Whitwam successfully defended his third place in the final event of the national series in Newport on Saturday.

He reached his seventh A final to secure the necessary points, adding a bronze medal to his Northern and Manchester championship titles.

Taylor lay down a marker, winning the first heat of the Ken McCreesh Cup at the Goshen track.

James Elston took the second heat before the two riders went head-to-head in the fourth.

Elston had the inside start, but Taylor hit the first bend in the lead and held on to take a textbook win.

Taylor went on to take a maximum 16 points to claim the overall title, while Elston finished second and Adam Turnbull took third.

Robyn Whalley held off a late challenge from Becky Mason to finish as the top girl, while Louis Turner won the under-12s medal, with Danny Miller second and Sean Etheridge third.

Bury will compete in the final round of the Northern Trophy – the four-a-side competition – on Sunday, with a last chance to make up the gap to leaders Stockport.

A number of Bury riders still also have plenty to go for in the individual events.
