MAVERICKS coach Lee Fishwick believes a change of scenary has given the club a real boost as they prepare for life in Division One of the Manchester Area Basketball League (MABL).

The club moved to Bury Grammar School from its previous base in Whitefield in the close season following an invitation from MABL rivals Bury Blue Devils.

The change of home also led to a change of name, with Whitefield dropped from the title.

And Fishwick believes they are already reaping the rewards from the switch.

“After a fantastic first season we felt it was important to make some changes due to constant let downs at our home venue in Whitefield,” said the Mavericks coach.

“After perusing numerous venues, Mike Nichols, of the Bury Blue Devils, came up with what we believed was a very good option.

“The court share with the Blue Devils has saved the club thousands of pounds and enabled us to have joint training sessions, which in turn has improved our team no end.”

The Mavericks, who secured promotion from MABL Division Two last season, go into the new season with an improved squad and fresh impetus.

They also have a new sponsor, ExtraGas, which has allowed them to buy new kit and training equipment.

“Our pre-season training has gone very well, with improvements in fitness, skill and, most importantly, team spirt,” added Fishwick.

“Winning both of our pre-season friendly games has just improved the mood further and means we go into our first league game full of confidence.”

The Mavericks kick off the season with a home match against Hue End today.
