A SECOND successive weekend of double victories saw the Lancashire Spinners book their place in the final of the Patrons National Cup and continue their march towards the EBL Division Two title.

And coach Steven Gayle was unable to hide his delight with his side's semi-final victory over London Greenhouse Pioneers on Sunday.

“It’s terrific to make a national final in our first season," he said.

"We’ve been consistent home and away and we’re really looking forward to facing London Lituanica in the final.

"Hopefully we can bring a trophy back for our fans."

The Bury-based team travelled to the capital hoping for a repeat performance of the league victory earlier in the season and, despite a slow start, found themselves in front at the end of the first quarter thanks to efforts from Steven Vaughan and Kenny Ogunneye, and two three from Gayle.

Consistent play from Conor Porter, Mark Rangeley and Josh Houghton extended the lead through the second quarter and the Spinners led 50-31 at half time.

As the game progressed it was player coach Gayle and club captain Aitor Estrada who controlled the tempo of the game and kept the scoreboard ticking over including a huge fast break slam dunk from Gayle that silenced the home crowd.

Andre Gayle also found his shooting touch in the second half as the Spinners ran out 82-60 winners to clinch their place in the final.

The Spinners, who were without guard Andre Gayle and athletic forwards Kenny Ogunneye and Tom Sutton, welcomed back Anthony Kuczaj, for the visit of Worcester on Saturday.

Spinners started brightly, getting open shots against Worcester’s zone defence, with Aitor, Josh and Steven Vaughan making shots in the opening minutes.

The Wolves fought back with some excellent shooting to close the first quarter trailing just 26-21 to the Spinners.

In the second quarter, Spinners bench players, led by Yomi Taiwo dominated the play around the basket and extended the Spinners' lead to 57-36 at half time.

In the second half top scorer Josh Houghton, Conor Porter and Mark Rangeley scored freely, and while Worcester improved in the final quarter, it was the Lancashire team who came away with the victory 87-77 to retain their place at the top of the table.

The Spinners are away at Derbyshire Arrows on Saturday before hosting Ipswich at the Castle Hill Leisure Centre on February 14, tip off 5.40pm.
