BURY boxers achieved national and international success over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Olympic hopeful Muhammad Ali built on his first senior ABA title with victory for England in the annual Three Nations meeting.

And 12-year-old Ali Akbar Javid secured a place in the national schoolboy finals.

Muhammad Ali flew the flag for England in their international encounter against Scotland and Wales at the Magna Science and Adventure Centre in Rotherham last weekend.

The 19-year-old Bury ABC boxer showed his class recently when winning his first three senior bouts to claim gold at the ABA Elite Championships in Liverpool.

And he was at it again in the Three Nations, earning a unanimous points decision against Welsh fighter Davies Wesley in the opening round of the 52k division on Saturday before stopping Matthew McHale, of Scotland, after two rounds in Sunday's final.

Following his latest victory, Ali flew to Germany with the British boxing team for a training camp ahead of the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan next month.

Ali will go to the competition with an outside chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games in Rio next year, if he can power his way on to the podium.

Back in the UK, Akbar Javid is on the way to following in the footsteps of his talented Bury club-mate after earning a place in the final of the ABA schoolboy championships.

The 12-year-old beat Patrick O'Doherty, of the Hard and Fast Club, by a unanimous points decision to claim victory in the semi-finals of the 46k division at the De Montford Sports Hall in Evesham.

He will now go on to fight for the title in Sheffield on Saturday.

In a busy week for Bury ABC, three other young fighters took to the ring with varying degrees of success.

Adil Iqbal knocked out his opponent in the first round of their 50k bout at a meeting in Liverpool.

Iqbal made light work of Chris Brownbill, of West Wirral, while his brother Babar Iqbal came through a skills bout on the same bill, completing three rounds against Also Malone, of Kirkby, in a 36k contest.

On Saturday, Hassin Sajjad, aged 16, put up stern resistance against Cole Ledger, of Barnsley Star, before losing by a unanimous points decision in a meeting at Derne Valley Leisure Centre.
