FORMER Manchester Magic youngster Tayo Oyefusi joins Lancashire Spinners after a breakout season with Newcastle, writes Allen Gunn.

The Bury-based basketball club made Oyefusi their fifth summer addition with Mike Bernard, Cian Hickey, Alex Roberts and Connor Murtagh already in the fold for the 2015/16 season.

The 22-year-old Oyefusi, who captained Newcastle Knights to Division Four North and National Shield titles in 2014, was not shy about maintaining that winning attitude with Spinners.

He said: “I don’t like settling for anything less than winning so bringing home silverware is something we are capable of – I want to help the team be successful.

“Winning in Division One is something that the club is aiming for and it is something we will definitely be working towards.”

The forward joined Magic in 2011 at 15 where he earned promotion from Division Three to Division Two and Division One in consecutive seasons before a Tyneside switch.

Not only will Oyefusi’s experience be a huge asset, but his grit and rebounding ability will help secure second chance points, something the team struggled with at times last season.

He added: “I’ve been following the progression of the club for the last three years and seeing how well organised the club is and the progress they've made in such a short time made it appealing.

“It’s great being at a club that gives younger guys a chance especially in Division One. I believe it will make everybody work harder as they know that their hard work will be rewarded.

“It was clear that Ken [Masser] liked the type of player I am and I think it is key to play for someone who believes in you and is willing to use you effectively.”

Oyefusi will link up with former Magic teammates Conor Porter and Murtagh, the latter he lived with while in Manchester, and he cites both of them as a big influence in his decision.

“Conor let me know how positive the environment is within the club, which is one of the more important factors for me. I trust in him and it didn't take much convincing.”

Meanwhile, general manager Ken Masser was quick to praise his new signing’s character alongside his basketball talent – not to mention he fits the team dynamic of being young and British.

“Tayo brings leadership, energy and commitment to the squad. He’s a winner, he gives everything to get results and that mentality will help us. His friendship with Conor Porter, Connor Murtagh and others will give us good continuity and I’m sure he’ll settle right in.”

Oyefusi and all the new signings can be seen in action at the SuperJosh Charity game against the USA Selects on September 8 at Castle Leisure Centre.
