BURY Church of England High School student Matthew George has crowned an impressive season by scooping gold and silver medals at the British Summer Championships.

The 15-year-old, who swims for the City of Salford Swim team, clinched the British national champion title by winning the 15 years 400m Individual Medley, and followed that up with the runners-up spot in the 200m Individual Medley.

Matthew went into the 400m final as favourite and in a thrilling race he was able to pull away in the last 10 metres to take the gold medal in a six-second personal best time of 4:35.68.

Just two days later, the youngster qualified for the final of the 200m Individual Medley where he picked up the silver medal in a three-second lifetime best time of 2:09.34, which saw him narrowly miss gold in a fingertip finish.

"I’m buzzing," said Matthew.

"To be British champion is like a dream come true and what everyone in swimming hopes to achieve.

"I’m just pleased to have competed having been injured on the run up to the event. To come away with a title and a silver is fantastic."

Matthew's coach John Stout was also delighted for Bury youngster. “The 400m race was the most exciting age group event I have ever seen," he said.

"To dig in when it matters shows great character and determination but that’s what it takes to compete at this level."

The six-day British National competition in Sheffield, is the pinnacle meet of the season where 24 of the UK's top-ranked athletes in each age group compete in heats and finals in the hope of standing on the podium.

Matthew, who qualified for 10 events, also reached the final of the 100m backstroke, 100m Butterfly, 200m Butterfly and 400m Freestyle events.
