“TRUST them. Let them.” – that was the message from head coach Neal Hopkins after Spinners’ youngsters took command in a 74-48 victory over the University of Chester to advance to round two of the National Cup, writes Allen Gunn.

Hopkins said, “I know our young guys can play and do what we need them to do but it was great to see them have a true impact in the win.”

Kyle Carey tied for a team-high 16 points while George Darling added 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting and 10 rebounds.

Carey also recorded seven rebounds and four steals as the two 18-year-olds led a quartet of Myerscough College academy players in the win.

He said, “[Neal] wanted the younger guys to step up and I feel we did our part.”

The Division Four outfit was no match for Spinners who led 22-14 after one quarter before mounting a 21-point halftime advantage.

Connor Murtagh, who matched Carey’s 16 point effort, converted two-straight three-pointers to start the third quarter as Chester struggled to keep the game close.

Carey and Darling scored 12 of Spinners’ final 14 points to close out the victory.
