MICK Jelley’s first boxing show for more than six years was a knockout success earlier this month.

The event was a sell-out at Radcliffe Civic Hall on October 3 and saw some of the region’s best boxers take on representatives from Ireland.

And the 71-year-old Bury Amateur Boxing Club coach was delighted that all his hard work paid off in what is likely to be his last show on the boxing circuit.

“It was a fantastic success and a brilliant night,” Jelley told the Bury Times.

“It was a full house with more than 350 people turning up, and I could have sold another 500 tickets quite easily.

“However, it is such hard work to organise a show like that, so that was probably the last one I will do.”

The attendance of Bolton boxer Amir Khan and his father Shah gave fans an added attraction during an action-packed night featuring 12 bouts.

The Irish contingent were well represented with members from Banbridge and Gilford boxing clubs.

Bury ABC won the first two bouts with the referee stopping Ali-Akbar Javid’s 48kg schoolboy contest in the first round as the 12-year-old Bury youngster overcame Shane O’Gorman, while Saif Quershi claimed an unanimous points victory against Chorley’s ABC’s Alan Sanderson in his 63kg junior contest.

The hosts were defeated in the third and fourth bouts with Maelor ABC’s Troy James beating Adil Iqbal on points in a 53kg schoolboy fight and Umar Niaz losing out on a split decision to Connor McFarlane from Natbridge ABC in his 55kg junior contest.

Thirteen-year-old Zain Ahmed got Bury ABC back to winning ways with a unanimous points success over Matty Patton in a schoolboy 45kg contest, but Box Clever ABC’s Patrick Dunne lost on points to Ireland’s Connor Vint in a 71kg youth bout.

Sarah Dunne, Eessa Ahmed, Muavia Nasim and Brian Rennie all won their bouts for Bury ABC.

A unanimous points victory for Dunne saw off Hebden Bridge’s Hatty Nylan in an 59kg open class contest

Ahmed also defeated Leigh ABC’s Sean McGoldrick on points in his 72kg senior bout.

Nasim and Rennie claimed split decision wins over Ireland’s Lee McKee in a 53kg junior success and Natbridge ABC’s Fergus Quinn in a 76kg senior open class fight respectively.

Centurions ABC’s Danny Wright took on Luke Morgan from Ireland and won the 66kg senior open class event unanimously on points and Bury ABC’s Wilson Rushton lost on a split decision to Ireland’s Jamie Douglas in a 59kg senior contest in the final fight of the night.
