THE ladies' second team suffered a disappointing penalty shootout defeat against Heaton in the All Divisions Cup on Sunday to round off a miserable weekend for Bury.

Both men's teams fell to comprehensive defeats against local rivals Bolton. The ladies' first team were denied victory against struggling Oldham in the final minute of their game, while the ladies' third team were beaten by Eagley Tornadoes.

Bury ladies’ second team were close to pulling off a major cup shock when they held Second Division Heaton to a 4-4 draw only for them to lose 3-1 on penalty strokes in the All Divisions Cup competition.

With Heaton flying high at the top of their division this was always going to be a tough game, even with the one-goal advantage awarded in Bury’s favour to reflect their Third Division status.

Excellent goalkeeping from player of the game Hania Nicholson gave Bury a solid base to build on before Sophie Foreman put the Castlebrook side in front as she bravely forced the ball past the onrushing keeper.

Two quick Heaton goals pulled the scores level, and a third strike put the visitors in front.

Lisa Davies turned home from close range following a short corner, to bring Bury back level and maintain hope of a major upset.

The second half proved a much tighter affair, before a moment of individual brilliance from Lorna Wroe put Bury back in front. The forward’s solo run was rounded off with a close range finish underneath the goalkeeper to restore Bury’s lead.

Unfortunately, Heaton levelled within two minutes to send the tie into penalty strokes. Joy Kennedy was the only Bury player to convert her stroke as Heaton emerged victorious.

The ladies’ first team were looking to get back to winning ways against struggling Oldham.

But despite goals from in-form Livvy Barber, Beth Topping and Jo Millar, the ladies were unable to come away with all three points.

A last minute short corner saw Oldham level the scores at 3-3 as Bury paid for not converting more of their chances.

There was more late drama, this time for the ladies’ third team, as they lost 3-2 to Eagley Tornados in the dying moments of a tight encounter in the Bolton League.

Goals from skipper Claire Makin and Emma Rodger had given Bury hope of claiming a point, before Eagley snatched a late winner to round off a disappointing weekend for all of Bury’s teams.
