BURY Hockey Club were named Bury’s Club of the Year for the second consecutive season this week.

The ladies' section took much of the credit for the accolade at the Bury Sports Awards on Thursday with each of the three teams enjoying success in the 2014-15 season.

The ladies' first team won the Greater Manchester Division Two title, the second team were promoted from Great Manchester Division Four and the ladies third team won the Cleworth Cup.

The men’s first team and ladies’ second team currently sit third in their respective divisions as the club continues to thrive with excellent numbers attending training sessions and matches, with the club’s Back to Hockey campaign playing a key role in boosting number for the ladies’ section.

On the pitch, an understrength Bury ladies' first team faced an uphill battle on Saturday when they took on Manchester University in the Division One Cup competition with just 10 players.

The Castlebrook outfit eventually lost 5-1 with the students' numerical advantage causing the hosts problems.

The Bury players soaked up wave after wave of pressure and although defenders Ashleigh Kay and Julie Thomson entered excellent individual performances, they were unable to stop the University visitors from taking a 3-0 first half lead.

Beth Topping produced a moment of individual brilliance in the second period when she latched onto a Thomson clearance before racing half of the pitch and finding the net.

The strike was no more than a consolation though because the students claimed two more goals to finally see off a gutsy Bury side.
