KYLE Carey scored with a second remaining in the game to lift Lancashire Spinners to their fourth consecutive league win over Worthing Thunder on Saturday, writes Allen Gunn.

“We just wanted to get a good shot off and to avoid overtime,” said Carey.

He had 15 points and six rebounds whilst the Bury-based basketball club had a total of five finishing in double-figures scoring in the 95-93 win.

Two Worthing free throws tied the game with four seconds in the fourth quarter but following a timeout, Connor Murtagh whipped in a pass to the unmarked Kyle Carey whose layup bounced around the rim before falling.

“It’s a huge moment for Kyle,” Lancashire coach Neal Hopkins said.

The two-point loss, meanwhile, is Worthing’s closest in league play as it suffered 16 and 22-point defeats to Essex and Northumbria, respectively.

“We felt this game was a true test of where we are going to be this year,” said Thunder coach Daniel Hildreth. “The game was played at a high quality and it’s a credit to both teams.”

In game where there were 16 lead changes and 18 ties, each team was only able to establish its largest advantage at five points.

Lancashire scored six of seven three-pointers in the second half, including a timely conversion by Mark Rangeley with just over three minutes remaining in the final quarter, which sliced the Thunder lead to 84-82.
