NORTH West Premiership leaders Oldham continued their unbeaten start to the campaign after winning 55-40 at YWCA Bury.

It was always going to be a daunting task for the the Bury Grammar School-based side after the table-toppers went into the match having scored 494 goals in their previous seven victories.

The home side did not settle in the opening quarter as the players struggled to adapt to new combinations in both attack and defence, with Rachel Newbold moving back into goal defence and Tyrene Karim switching to goal shooter.

They trailed 17-11 going into the second period, but improved with some slick feeds into the attacking circle from wing attack Lucy Lucketti and centre Lois Pearson.

They also benefitted from some telling interceptions by shot stopper Anna Ballard and trailed by just eight goals going into half-time, aided by pinpoint shooting from Karim and goal attacker Clare Morley.

Bury trainer Ruth Moreno moved Karim back to goal keeper at the break, and pushed Pearson into her attacking role.

But a flurry of mistakes in the third quarter let Oldham open up a 14-point lead before the home side to stem the tide in the final period.

"I was pleased with the commitment from the whole squad," said Moreno. "But we lost the game due to our own mistakes and we need to ensure that we cut those out."

The defeat left Bury in seventh place going into their next match at home to fifth-placed Deeside on Saturday.
