JACK Smith took full advantage of his handicap to win Bury Athletic Club's Woodward Trophy.

The club's Christmas Handicap is run over two miles, with senior and junior athletes competing against each other.

Young Smith ran the race of his life to capitalise on his handicap and hold off the charge of the seniors to pick up the trophy, as well as a cash prize donated by club member Simon Vaughan.

Fastest on the day was Rob Granby, who charged through the field to take second place overall.

Giles Bennett was the next aggregate finisher, followed by Katie Geelan, Siobhan Guy and Dan Potts.

Harry Yates held off a strong challenge from Freya Potts to win the under-11s race.

Scarlett Hamilton was third after battling Noah Carter, Rory Pixton and Gilbert Vaughan, who finished in that order.
