BURY'S top two senior men's sides both hit their opposition for six on Saturday.

But the weekend had a sting in its tail for the seconds as they followed up a big win with defeat against City of Manchester the following day.

The firsts picked up where they left off before the festive break with a 6-1 win at home to South Lakes.

Man-of-the-match James Oakes grabbed five goals and set up another in an outstanding individual display.

Bury stormed into an early lead as Oakes broke away on the right, drew the keeper and then squared the ball to strike partner Adam Friend, who finished well on his reverse stick.

South Lakes hit back to equalise just five minutes later as some slack marking in the Bury circle allowed a right wing cross to be converted into the bottom corner.

But the visitors consistently lost their discipline throughout the match and had players sin-binned on more than one occasion due dissent.

Bury took full control and never looked back after Oakes put them in front again in the 17th minute, sweeping home after some impressive interchanges from the Bury midfield.

He grabbed Bury’s third four minutes later and claimed his hat-trick following a short corner six minutes into the second half.

Bury turned the screw when the visitors were reduced to 10 men permanently following the dismissal of their centre forward.

Oakes fired in his fourth with 56 minutes gone, again following good link-up play with strike partner Friend, before rounding of a fantastic individual display with his fifth, three minutes from full time.

The result leaves Bury clear in second place, hot on the heels of leaders Prescot.

The second team won their first match of the weekend by the same 6-1 scoreline at bottom side Wigan 2s.

Skipper Sameer Sheikh turned home a pass from midfielder Peter Wragg following a short corner routine to open the scoring midway through the first half.

And Bury doubled their lead when Adam Johnson neatly touched home at the far post before Rob Fogwil crashed home a drag flick from another short corner seconds before half time.

Johnson turned in his second after the break following a scramble in the circle, before Fogwill’s second drag flick of the day gave the visitors their fifth goal.

The Bury scoring was completed when Toby Carr-Brown deftly deflected in Danny Quin’s shot, with Wigan gaining a consolation goal in the final minute.

Sadly, they were unable to continue their good start to the year as they went down 3-1 at home to second-placed City of Manchester 3s on Sunday.

The visitors went 2-0 up through identical close-range finishes from goalmouth scrambles

But Dan Balding deflected in Sheikh’s strike from a short corner to give Bury hope, only for Manchester to grab a decisive third goal after the break, again following a goalmouth scramble.
