BURY ladies’ second team beat Didsbury Northern fifths 3-2 on Sunday to win the All Division Plate final.

Having lost to Salford in midweek to miss out on the league title, Bury were determined to end the season on a high and started well.

Several chances came and went for Bury before they grabbed the lead in scrappy fashion. Lorna Wroe produced an improvised reverse finish which wrong-footed the Didsbury keeper and found the bottom corner.

With just 30 seconds of the first half remaining, Didsbury broke following a Bury short corner to equalise, and Bury conceded again within two minutes of the restart.

The Castlebrook-based side regrouped, however, and midway through the half, youngster Rachel Bailey scored a fine individual goal to make it 2-2.

And with 12 minutes remaining, quick interplay between Sophie Foreman and Wroe saw a chance open up which Wroe managed to slide past the onrushing keeper.

Despite a nervous last five minutes, which saw Colette Green produce a vital goal-line clearance, Bury saw out the game to clinch some hard-earned silverware.

The men’s second team ended their poor season on a high note as they swept aside Salford University 5-0 on Saturday.

Bury took an early lead through Sam Plant before Adam Friend scored after some excellent build-up play from Toby Carr-Brown.

The second half saw Friend grab his second of the game with a finish from the top of the circle, before midfielder Rob Fogwill fired home and Peter Wragg then rounded off the scoring.

The ladies’ first team crashed to another heavy defeat on Saturday, losing 7-2 against Manchester University with a host of second-team players having to step in.

Jo Miller deflected in Becky Nield’s cross while Wroe was also on target for Bury.

Despite a dominant second-half performance by the ladies’ second team, they had to settle for second place in division three after losing 2-0 to Salford University.
