BOLTON cycling squad Team Chronomaster showed there is much more to the sport than the Tour de France with a host of fine results on the bustling North West circuit.

Its riders continued to rack up the points in the British Cycling regional rankings by securing a number of top-10 finishes to move up to sixth place.

Four of the club's third-category riders headed up to Carlisle for the Smithfield Road Race, which is run on a 60-mile undulating course close to the Scotland border.

They worked well together as a team and upped the race tempo with some early attacking moves.

Neil Wood, of Heaton, got himself into a late breakaway group with five miles remaining and crossed the uphill finish line in fifth place, with team-mate Adam Baines coming home in seventh.

Team Chronomaster's latest recruit Jon Fowles took part in the first and second category on the same course, managed to take ninth place in a tough race.

Kris Zentek headed south to Cheshire to compete in an age-related race and was rewarded with a seventh-place finish.

And Simon Deplithch continued his good form in the criterium events at the Preston circuit, taking third to inch closer to overall victory in this year's competition.
