JAMES Guy made it into his fourth final of the Olympic swimming gala after helping the British team set a new national record in the heats of the 4x100m medley relay.

Team GB were already well ahead when Radcliffe-born Guy set off on the third leg, completing the 100m butterfly in 51.68.

Chris Walker-Hebborn got the ball rolling with 53.68 in the backstroke before Olympic 100m breaststroke champion Adam Peaty opened up a sizeable gap with 57.40 in his leg.

And after Guy, aged 20, maintained the lead, Duncan Scott made no mistake in the freestyle, coming home in 47.82 as the team posted an overall time of 3:30.47, taking two tenths of a second off the British record.

Remarkably, it was more than a second faster than the time of the American team, who won the second heat in 3:31.83.

And while the USA squad have a raft of stars to bring in for the final, which will take place at 3.04am on Sunday, British time, Guy and his team-mates have a realistic chance of winning what will be the final race of the gala.

Guy could only reach the semi-final of the 100m butterfly, but won a silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle and finished fourth in the 200m freestyle and sixth in the 400m freestyle in what is his Olympic debut.
