IT may be four years away but Tottington swimmer Charlotte Hulme has already made her move for a place in the Team GB team at the next Olympics.

The 14-year-old former Ramsbottom Swimming Club member set personal bests in the heats and the final as she claimed victory in the 100m breaststroke in her age group at the ASA National Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Her winning time of 1min 15.16secs in the final was nearly four seconds faster than her previous best going into the championships.

Dad Nigel Hulme expects Team GB to come calling after her medal-winning performance, with Charlotte also claiming bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

But he believes she is best placed continuing her training with current team City of Manchester at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.

“It was Charlotte's first attempt at the national, it was the first time she had achieved the qualifying times, so her remit was just to go there, enjoy it and maybe get to into the final – winning was totally unexpected,” Nigel said.

“Anyone who claims a national title is normally asked to join up with the GB talent programme, so that is probably something she will have to think about.

"But she is happy with the way she is training, and is really enjoying herself, so it is probably best to stay where she is.

"There is no reason to push it at this point and she still has some growing to do.

"Her immediate aim should be just to keep on making the nationals, work on bringing down her PB and she will be there or thereabouts.

“Charlotte does have aspirations to swim at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, though. It is on her radar, and after seeing our team swim out of their skins at Rio that has only inspired her more.”

The teenager is certainly dedicated to her swimming, spending hours every day commuting to and from the aquatics centre in Manchester.

"It is crazy the hours she has to put into it," said Nigel, who is a service engineer by trade but also works as a volunteer stroke development coach with City of Manchester.

"She gets up at 3am every Tuesday and Thursday to go to training before school (at Canon Slade in Bolton).

"Charlotte also trains in Manchester every day after school, from Monday to Friday, and gets up for training at 4.30am every Saturday.

"So there is no doubt she deserves all the success that comes to her, but we also have to keep her feet on the ground and make sure she just keeps on enjoying it – the rest will take care of itself."
