FRANCIS Woodcock's blistering time to win the juvenile prize at Sunday's Ramsbottom Rake was the highlight of a disappointing day for local riders in the testing hill climb.

The 13-year-old Bury Clarion member completed the 875m course in 3mins 7.1secs to claim 35th place overall.

He was the second Clarion rider home, trailing David Stammers, who was 31st, by 3.8secs.

The team prize was the club's main aim at the start of the day, but with a record field of 105 riders competing it was always going to be a tough ask.

And that's how it proved, although their overall placing of eighth would no doubt have been much improved if Joe Cadwallader's chain had not slipped during his effort.

Cadwallader, who was part of the Clarion team that won the event in 2013 and 2014, eventually made it home in 3:48.1.

Policeman Gareth Davies, another member of the club's previous winning team, was called into work and could not ride.

Both riders would have been expected to make the club's top three to count for the team prize.

Other clarion finishers: 63rd Jason MacDonald 3:31.4, 64th Oliver Philbin (JUV) 3:31.8 and 69th Charlotte Gorman 3:37.8.
