BURY'S ladies' first team continue to carry the torch for the club following a 3-0 win at home to Manchester Moss Park that kept them second in Division Two of the Greater Manchester Women's League.

The ladies' second team also produced a decent display to claim a point at home to University of Manchester seconds.

But the men's firsts had a torrid weekend, going down 9-0 at Golborne in the league on Saturday before being knocked out of the Lancashire Cup by Bolton the following day.

Jo Miller continued her fine recent goalscoring form, boosting her tally to five in three games following another three on Saturday.

She tapped in an early opener from close range after being teed up by Kerry Cameron, who finished off a sweeping move to put Bury 2-0 up after the break.

Miller rounded off the scoring to keep Bury just one point behind leaders Prescot with a game in hand.

The leaders do not play this weekend, meaning Bury will go top if they win at bottom side Glossop on Sunday.

Bury seconds picked up their fourth point of the campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to relegation rivals University of Manchester.

A win would have seen them leapfrog the university team and move out of the bottom two.

But after going behind in the first half, Miller, the star of the first team, came up with the goods to rescue a point, scoring on her first appearance of the season for the seconds in what was her second match of the day.

The men's first team dropped to ninth in Division Three North of the North West League following their drubbing by Golborne.

After falling 1-0 down, James Oakes was denied a leveller by a fantastic low save before Golborne stunned them by scoring three goals in as many minutes.

The Bury backline could not cope with the pace and movement of the Golborne front line as they shipped another two goals shortly before half time.

They tightened up after the break to limit the home side to an early second-half strike and two more in the final five minutes.

Bury led 3-2 at the break against Bolton in the cup after goals from Oakes, Matthew Birch and a smart reverse-stick strike by Piers Smith-Hughes.

But the home side retook the lead in the second half with a short-corner strike and a second penalty stroke of the game before picking off Bury as they charged forward looking for an equaliser, sealing the tie 6-3.
