LANCASHIRE Spinners held out at Hemel Storm to record their second straight win in Division One of the National Basketball League.

Mark Rangeley (24 points) and David Walsh (23) led the scoring for the Bury-based side, with both hitting five three-pointers.

And Jack Hudson again contributed a solid 16 points, but it took a rearguard action from the Castle Leisure Centre outfit to clinch a 90-88 win, building on a four-point victory over Manchester Magic the previous weekend.

“Defence really saved the day when they looked poised to make a run,” said Lancashire coach Neal Hopkins.

“We’re getting there and moving forward, building a bit of character in these wins.”

The Spinners moved above Hemel into eighth place in the table after recording their third win from seven matches.

“We know we can compete against the best teams in the division,” said Walsh, who has a 50 per cent shooting success rate.

“It’s just understanding where our lapses are in close games and maintain our intensity that puts us in positions to win.”

Lancashire finished the opening quarter with a 10-point advantage that was cut to just three by the end of the first quarter. A 10-3 run from Hemel at the start of the third quarter saw the hosts take a 57-53 lead with just under seven minutes remaining.

But the Spinners responded to go ahead by five points late in the quarter as Walsh took control.

Leading by two points with 31 seconds left, Lancashire withstood four chances from Hemel to either tie or take the lead as they held on to seal the win.
