KERRY Cameron fired in the winning stroke of a sudden-death penalty shootout as Bury ladies' first team upset the odds to move into the semi-final of the All Divisions Cup.

North League side Oldham equalised with a last-gasp penalty as the match ended 4-4 after normal time.

The two sides could not be separated after the regulation penalty stroke contest ended 3-3, but after it went to sudden death Oldham missed their second penalty and Cameron stayed calm to win it 2-1.

Bury play their hockey two divisions below Oldham but look destined to halve that gap as they close in on the Division Two title in the Greater Manchester Hockey Association.

They took a break from their promotion charge last weekend and, after being given a two-goal start by the handicappers, extended their advantage with a powerful strike into the bottom corner from Beth Topping.

The visitors, however, responded well and fired in three unanswered goals to set up a tense second half.

Player-of-the-match Zoe Round marshalled her fellow defenders superbly after the break to repel the Oldham attacks before youngster Rachel Bailey fired Bury back in front, finishing through a crowded circle.

There was late drama when an Oldham shot struck defender Julie Thomson’s foot and they converted the penalty flick to force the shootout.

But Cameron proved the hero to set up a semi-final against the University of Manchester.

A fine weekend for the ladies saw the second team storm to a 7-1 win at Didsbury Northern in the cup on Sunday.

Sophie Foreman helped herself to four goals, with Rosie Hanley, Lorna Wroe and Joy Kennedy each scoring one apiece.

The victory went some way to making up for a 3-2 defeat at bottom side Glossop on Saturday which saw them miss the chance to climb out of the Division Two relegation zone.

The men’s first team’s inconsistent season continued as they crashed to a 5-2 defeat at home to Golborne in Division Three North of the North West Men's League. Goals from Adam Friend and Ahtisham Khan were mere consolation strikes as Golborne’s pace and physical approach proved too much for the home side to contain.

And the second team’s long unbeaten run came to a halt with a 3-1 defeat at Northern.

Sam Plant converted a penalty, which he won himself, to reduce the arrears after the home side had taken a 2-0 lead, but Northern killed the game off with a third goal in the second half.

The weekend's results left Bury men's firsts in seventh place, while the seconds are second in Division Six North South.
