BURY Golf Club's captain's drive-in was taken literally by new incumbent Alan Bennett, who arrived in a classic Ford Mexico dressed as the Stig from BBC One show Top Gear.

Bennett kept up the disguise right up to his more traditional drive-in from the first tee.

The captains' drive-in competition was won by Ray Porter and Steve Nuttall, who amassed a stunning 49 stableford points to win by a clear six points.

Bury's new lady captain, Amanda Hassall, was a little more understated as she drove into office, but the outcome was still pretty eye-catching.

Watched by a large gallery, she launched her ball with a three-wood on the first green, ending up only 18 inches from the hole before going on to calmly roll the putt in for a birdie two.

In line with the club's policy of developing new talent, the new junior captain, 10-year-old Finley LeGood, drove in alongside his vice captain Elliott Stabler, aged nine.

Finley took over from Beth Greenhalgh, who has served as junior captain for the last two years. She has been a credit to the club, managing to get her handicap down to nine and representing Lancashire at both girls' and ladies' level.

Over the past month, all of the clubs in the Bury and District Golf Association have been holding their drive-ins, which traditionally launch the start of the new summer season.

The BDGA also includes Greenmount, Harwood, Lowes Park, Pike Fold, Rossendale and Walmersley golf clubs.
