THE sun shone at Pike Fold Golf Club for the first competition of the Bury and District Golf Association season.

Ken and June Whitfield, of Breightmet Golf Club, won the Walter Holden Mixed Greensomes with a nett score of 62 in a 66-strong field.

It was the first match of Dot Scholes' presidency, the first ever female president of the association.

Scholes said: "We were blessed with perfect weather, and the course and greens helped bring out some excellent scores.

"It was an excellent day all round, and I am so pleased that Ken and June came in with a nett 62 to win the competition.

"The scores were all very good but a score of 62 stood out on the leader board.”

There were also winners of two divisions on the day.

Division One, for golfers with handicaps of 18 or less, was won by Steve Horner and Theresa Winrow, from Pike Fold, with 64.2. They were followed closely by Steve and Chris Mackay, from Walmersley, with 66.6.

The winners of Division Two, for players with handicaps of 18 or over, were Richard Nightingale and Rosie Lund, from Harwood, who romped home with 63.6, ahead of Mike and Elizabeth Howarth, who claimed second place on a card play-off with 66.6.

“Everyone really enjoyed the day and I must give thanks to everyone at Pike Fold for hosting the event,” said Scholes.

"The course was beautifully prepared.”
