BURY rider Simon Yates retained the white jersey in the Tour de France after yesterday’s bunch sprint into Troyes and has set his sights on keeping it all the way to Paris.

The 24-year-old leader of the Orica-Scott team stayed out of trouble on the 216km sixth stage to remain sixth overall, 43 seconds behind race leader Chris Froome.

Yates made his move up the standings on Wednesday with a gutsy ride in what was the first of three mountain-top finishes on this year’s Tour.

His aim is to match the feat of twin brother Adam, who last year was the first British rider ever to win the white jersey, worn by the best young rider.

“There’s not many summit finishes this year and I think you have to take the opportunity when it comes,” said Yates.

“There’s a lot of strong guys not far behind me so it’s going to be difficult to keep hold of (the white jersey), but I’ll give it my best shot.”
