JAMES Guy’s scintillating exploits at this summer’s World Swimming Championships are only a sign of things to come, according to British swimming legend Mark Foster.

Guy walked away from Hungary with a medal of each colour in a tremendous all-round showing.

The Bury-born swimmer scooped gold in the 4x200m freestyle with Duncan Scott, Stephen Milne and Nick Grainger, after securing silver in the 4x100m medley relay and the 100m butterfly bronze.

His eye-catching performances in the fly left many pundits and fans believing it could prove to be the way forward for the 21-year-old, who has three world titles in total as well as European and Commonwealth crowns.

And Foster has backed Guy to reach further heights in the sport as part of a rich array of British swimming talent emerging on the world stage.

“He’s got an unbelievable engine,” said Foster, who boasted six world and 11 European titles from a glittering career in the pool.

“We knew he could swim butterfly, because we’d seen it in the relay before, but not what he did in the summer at the worlds, I think he even surprised himself.

“The exciting thing now is that he can keep going for four minutes in the 400m, he’ll do the 200m fly.

“If he stays focused, he will do great things, he’s that good.”

Foster was speaking at Stoke Park, where he was taking part in a tennisathon as part of SportsAid Week along with Olympic medallist, heptathlete Denise Lewis.

Guy’s recent focus on fly, Foster says, can play into his hands and he can shoulder the expectation that comes with competition.

“We all have so much expectations on our big races, fly was always fun for me. There wasn’t even a 50m fly event when I first started out – there wasn’t much pressure on it,” he added.

“As much as I think James will dominate the fly, he’ll have the attitude of it being fun as well.

“I would say James would be an unbelievable 300m swimmer. He’s not quite got enough for a 400m, but he’s amazing at 200m.

“But with that background and endurance for 200m fly, because that is about who dies the least, I think that’s going to be special for him and he’ll relish a new event.”
